Classes 5 and 6 joined together during the second week of term for a Chinese week. We started with some students finding out some facts about China , where it is, what people wear, their climate, their Capital City etc. Some of the group made decorated fans, and Chinese flags.

One afternoon was spent with 2 visiting Mandarin teachers who showed the students how to write and say their names in characters and how to count in Mandarin. They also brought a computer programme that enabled us to play dot to dot following Chinese characters.

We spent a morning listening to Chinese music both traditional and modern, and then made some decorated wood blocks to accompany the music. Various art and craft activities were completed including window decorations, character pictures, a Koi carp collage, and lanterns.

The highlight of the week was on Friday morning tasting authentic Chinese food including, Lizard fish, preserved plums, wasabi peas, and grass jelly drink. We then had a Chinese meal of spring rolls, prawn toast, sweet and sour chicken, chicken and noodles and egg fried rice. The students and staff had a go at using chopsticks, and it was a hilarious end to a good week.

Classes 5 and 6 Residential trip to Kilve

On the 6th May 10 students and 4 staff set off for a 3 night residential experience at

Kilve Court
. The group consisted of 5 students who had been last year, who were keen to show the others the routine,

We started the week with the Climbing Wall. So it was on with helmets and harnesses for the first time. Everyone had a go and 4 managed to reach the top! Well done Leon, Paula, Sophia and Helen. Then it was off on the fantasy trail – a walk through the woods blindfolded. Not surprisingly we didn’t see any wildlife, as our students were making too much noise warning one another of trees, tunnels, spider’s webs etc! By they were asking for bed, but no it was off for a walk first.

On the second day we tackled High Ropes, and Archery before spending the afternoon on the beach searching for fossils, shells, and crabs. The students really enjoyed the Archery, most said it was their favourite activity. The high ropes were a challenge for everyone (they are very high) including the staff. But in particular Laurence, Lewis , Leon and Paula showed the others the way.

Day 3 saw us attacking the abseil tower before a trip to Tropiquaria. It’s hard to let yourself go out of a tall tower backwards, but everyone had a go from all 3 heights. Jessica was really scared but overcame her fears and found she actually enjoyed it. This gave some of the others the courage to go on their own. A very happy time was spent at Tropiquaria, particularly chasing around the pirate ships.

The last morning we tried the Low ropes course and Grass sledging, where Connor, Dominic and Pete showed Ian (the Kilve Instructor) that Baytree students were tougher than most mainstream students in that they would all start from the top instead of ½ way down.

The low ropes were fun as always,  and proved yet again, that the students trust all the staff as they lean on them, sit on them, and just assume they will be there if they start to wobble.

A wonderful trip away for everyone, with many fears overcome and lots of fun had by all.

This term in Class 5, our Humanities theme was the UK . The students looked at maps of the UK , including putting together simple puzzles,                                   labelling the 4 countries and making the four flags.

The students came to school dressed in red, blue, white or green to represent a country, and we tasted foods from the different parts of the UK . On another day we made and shared a 3 course lunch with Class 6.

Students also brought in pictures of their immediate and extended families and we represented these on a map of the UK by coloured stickers.

To finish off the term we had an Irish dancer, and a Morris dancer in class, and we watched video clips of Welsh clog dancing and Scottish dancing. The students really enjoyed this and had a go at dancing themselves.
