Classes 5 and 6 have been horse riding in 2 groups since September. The pupils have overcome fears and now look like professional riders. They can all ask their ponies to "walk on" and some can make their ponies stop. They all walk and trot and some have learnt to steer their ponies through obstacles. All pupils have thoroughly enjoyed the extra curricular experience.

Classes 5 and 6 have worked together for lots of the curriculum areas since September.

Report from Market Visit.

On Monday 8th September 15 students, aged 11 to 14 years and 8 staff from Baytree School visited Sedgemoor Livestock Market.  We were very fortunate to be joined by Farmer Nick Baker from Alvis’ Farm.  We visited the market as part of our Food and Farming topic in Geography.

The Teachers and Nick had previously visited the market and met with Robert Venner for a tour and to plan the day visit.

We arrived at the market at 10am and Robert greeted us.  He took us to see the calves in their pens and explained how they would be sold.  Pip, one of the teachers, had some calves for sale.  We watched the calves sold.  The staff and students were fascinated by the speed the auctioneer was speaking.

Robert then took us to see the sheep.  He showed us how the farmer can tell how old the sheep is by looking at it’s teeth.  We saw how the sheep are weighed and weighed each class.  Class 5 weighed a little bit more than Class 6.

After seeing the sheep, Robert showed us big cattle.  He talked us through the different types of meat cuts and who the buyers would be.  We were surprised to hear that Morrisons and Sainsburys supermarkets would be buying their beef.

Robert then showed us the auction ring.  The students split into 3 groups, auctioneers, buyers and animals.  Kayleigh and Lewis were the auctioneers and sold the ‘animals’ to the ‘buyers’.  This was really good fun.

After dinner we went back to the auction ring and saw the big cattle sold.

Everyone had a really good day and learnt lots about the animals and auctioneering.  Our next day visit will be a visit to Alvis’s Farm.  We will see the cows milked, visit the cheese store and go on a tractor and trailer ride.  We are all looking forward to this visit in November.
